Hongkong, 7th. August, 1908.

I have the honour to inform you

of the following matters in connection with the Railway.

Some little time ago Sir Paul Chater called on me and

informed me that he had heard that two at least of the

larger bridges on the Railway had cracked badly and that

others were not in a satisfactory condition. I at once

went to see them, and found that the masonry blocks had

parted, and the bridges apeared to be in a dangerous

condition. As the most serious of these was in the

section let to contract to Messrs. Leigh and Orange and

as I had taken this opportunity of inspecting the progress

of the contract work Mr. Griffin partner of the firm and

at present its chief representative here accompanied rie.

Mr. Eves made very light of these cracks and I found that

they had begun as long as 6 months ago. In reply to my

questions as to why he had never mentioned the matter he

replied in the sense that it was of too trivial a nature.

I

BICHT HONOURABLE

THE EARL OF CREVE,

&C.
